Lando Norris was summoned by stewards after narrowly missing Oscar Piastri during a Safety Car period at the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on Oct. 4. Norris ran into the gravel trap on the outside of the track, then rejoined the queue several places behind where he had been. He said the cars ahead slowed more sharply than he expected.
The stewards called Norris to answer allegations of “driving erratically under Safety Car conditions, leaving the track and re-joining unsafely and/or overtaking another car behind the Safety Car.” The investigation covered the near-miss with Piastri and Norris’s return to the track. The RaceFans report said the article would be updated.
Norris said he saw the Mercedes slowing but could not tell how much the cars in front were responding to George Russell, who was on the inside. “I couldn’t see from the angle, and just from where I was, how much everyone had stopped because of George on the inside,” Norris said.
He described looking at Russell and then back towards the cars ahead. “By the time I kind of looked at George and looked back, I could see them, but it’s hard when you’re directly behind to see if they’re going 100 [kph], 200 or 10.” Norris said the cars were travelling at 10 kph, adding: “They were going 10, so I just got completely caught out. I guess it’s my fault in the end of the day. I was just unlucky with it everyone just checked up so much and I just got screwed over by it, that’s all.”
Alexander Albon was also under investigation for erratic driving in a separate incident involving Piastri. Earlier in another Safety Car deployment, Williams driver Albon was following team-mate Carlos Sainz Jnr into the pits. Albon appeared to slow, prompting Piastri to take avoiding action.
