The Edmonton Reptile Expo filled the St. Albert Enjoy Centre on Saturday with reptiles and amphibians, aiming to teach visitors about proper pet care and handling. Organized each year by the Herptile Rescue and Education Foundation (HREF), the family-friendly event began in 1994 and has grown each year, organizers said. All proceeds support the foundation’s rescue group.

Visitors could learn about reptiles and amphibians, and some animals could be touched, including Yoshi, the HREF’s boa ambassador. The expo also offered enthusiasts a place to buy supplies for pets. Mikayla Chevrier told CTV News Edmonton, “We’re actually at the point where we’re kind of outgrowing this (venue) and need to find something a little bit bigger.”

Chevrier said the rescue takes in animals from unsuitable homes and animals taken by animal care and control, then ensures they receive veterinary care. Bearded dragon owner Leanne Jiwan attended to help prepare her granddaughters for the care involved in owning a pet snake. “It’s not hard to take care of these animals in a loving way,” she said.

Jiwan said she wants the public to learn more about reptiles and their needs. “I would love to see more education. People think reptiles are throwaway pets. One of my rescues was found in a dumpster in December,” she said. She added, “Some of them live long lives … I think having these expos is something that we really need to have more of.”

The expo ran throughout the weekend. CTV News Edmonton’s Brandon Lynch contributed files to the report.
