Forget the Terminator scenario. When machines are a billion times smarter than us, they won't march down the street to get rid of us. They'll relate to us the way we relate to ants or flies.
Not hostile, just indifferent. That's actually the less comfortable truth. The danger was never intelligence itself.
There is nothing wrong with abundant intelligence. What's wrong is the value set of the humans who get to direct it. Used well, this same intelligence can build a genuine utopia, solving problems humanity's own limitations created.
Used badly, it multiplies our worst instincts at a scale we've never seen. So the work isn't stopping AI. It's making sure the people and the values behind it deserve the power they're about to hold.
