Alberta health officials have issued a public alert about possible hepatitis A exposure at Denny’s Restaurant Granville on Winterburn Road in Edmonton. Anyone who ate food from the restaurant on the dates identified in a public health news release is eligible for post-exposure immunization; the source text does not list those dates.
Hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver. Immunization can prevent infection if given within 14 days of initial exposure. The vaccine is a single dose, and recipients should monitor for symptoms for 50 days after vaccination and contact a doctor if they develop any.
Some people, particularly young children, can carry the infection without symptoms and still spread it. Hepatitis A passes through the fecal-oral route after direct contact, or indirectly through contaminated food or water. Infected people can also transmit the virus through food and beverages if they do not wash their hands properly.
