Alberta Health Services is investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness linked to the Mahogany Kinjo Sushi and Grill in southeast Calgary. The agency reports four confirmed and two probable cases, all associated with the restaurant at Mahogany Plaza S.E.
Those affected ate or drank at the location on or around Sept. 18 and 19. AHS said in a Thursday news release that testing identified the pathogen as Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, or STEC. The agency said the bacteria can spread through food or water contaminated with fecal matter, and through person-to-person contact when someone fails to wash their hands after using the washroom.
“Public health officials are working to identify the source of the infection, assess any ongoing risk and prevent additional illnesses,” AHS said. A public health inspection on Sept. 28 found no critical violations at the facility. No other STEC cases linked to the Mahogany Kinjo had been reported at the time of the release, and the restaurant remains open while the investigation continues.
People with STEC symptoms are asked to call 811 or contact their primary care provider to schedule a medical appointment.
