A 36-year-old Fort McKay woman has been charged in connection with a series of arsons in Fort McMurray and Fort McKay after a citizen identified clothing worn by a person in surveillance footage released to the public. The fires damaged personal property, including multiple vehicles along Alberta Drive and Poplar Crescent, and were reported to RCMP on Sept. 19.

Police said the woman was also linked to another arson in Fort McKay in May. She faces three counts of arson and one count of motor vehicle theft. The RCMP did not provide further details about the damage or the alleged theft.

The woman was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear Thursday at the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray. Fort McKay is about 63 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.

In a media release, Wood Buffalo RCMP said: “Wood Buffalo RCMP thank the public and community partners for their assistance in identifying the suspect of this investigation,” and, “We appreciate those who take the time to come forward and share information with police.”
