RCMP have arrested and charged an Edmonton man accused of making online threats to kill Prime Minister Mark Carney. Dwight Peter MacIntyre, 44, faces a charge of uttering a threat to cause death under section 264 of the Criminal Code. He is scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Edmonton on Nov. 25.
The RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) said it opened an investigation on Sept. 4 into a user of X, formerly known as Twitter, who allegedly posted threats targeting Carney. INSET arrested MacIntyre five days later. Police have not confirmed where the arrest occurred, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Supt. Matt Johnson, the officer in charge of national security with RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region, said in a media release: “People should not assume they can make threats online without consequences. When online comments cross the line into criminal conduct, police will investigate and take appropriate action to hold those responsible accountable.” He added: “Criminal online actions have real-world consequences, regardless of whether they are made behind a screen.”
RCMP thanked the Edmonton Police Service and Alberta RCMP’s Parkland detachment for supporting the investigation. The force also warned of a “time for increased vigilance,” citing the evolving security environment for public figures such as world leaders in Canada and around the world.
INSET investigates criminal offences related to terrorism, espionage, cyber attacks, nuclear security risks, foreign influenced activities and other national security issues. The arrest comes amid other reported threats in northern Alberta: threats posted to Snapchat prompted a lockdown at a Grande Prairie school, while a 16-year-old student threatened a shooting on the first day of school.
