Mika Hakkinen claimed his final Formula 1 victory at Indianapolis 25 years ago, overcoming a grid penalty for a pit lane infringement before the race. The win came in the penultimate round of the 2001 season and was reported on Sept. 30, 2026, in a RaceFans article by Keith Collantine, first published Sept. 24, 2026, at 12:52 p.m.

Post-race scrutiny brought further controversy when Jarno Trulli was disqualified from fourth place. Officials found that the skid blocks on his Jordan did not meet technical regulations. The team challenged the ruling at the International Court of Appeal and succeeded one month later.

Jordan argued that only two of the three required stewards had been present when the decision to exclude Trulli was made. The appeal court quashed the disqualification on that basis.

The Indianapolis event was also the last regular appearance in the commentary box for Murray Walker, the much-loved British Formula 1 television commentator. The report did not include direct quotations from Hakkinen, Trulli or other participants.

Collantine’s account appeared in RaceFans’ “On This Day” coverage. He founded the site in 2005, when it was called F1 Fanatic, and had previously worked as a motoring journalist. He began running RaceFans full-time in 2010, fulfilling a long-held ambition to focus entirely on his passion for motor racing.
