Alberta will receive a sixth area code, 568, starting June 10, 2028, under a plan approved by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The province needs a new code by 2029 to ensure it does not run out of phone numbers.

In a decision published Tuesday, the CRTC approved a recommendation from the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA), which it oversees. The commission directed the CNA to chair an ad hoc committee to develop a plan to address the shortage.

Alberta’s existing area codes are 368, 403, 587, 780 and 825. The CRTC’s approval adds 568 as the sixth code, with the new number set to take effect on June 10, 2028. The decision follows the committee process ordered by the commission to plan relief for the province’s numbering situation.
