The University of Lethbridge began a week of events Monday ahead of Wednesday’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed across Canada. The university is hosting activities leading up to the day, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous students are welcome throughout the week.

Monday’s program opened with a sweet-grass-on-coals ceremony. Participants also took part in ceremonial rock and face painting and listened to stories from Indigenous elders. Iniskim Indigenous Relations staff say participation is important for Canadians regardless of their background.

Annette Fox-BruisedHead, the university’s Indigenous Relations vice-provost, said: “I believe it sets a great example for students who are here-to show that we have to be committed, (and) that we are committed, to advancing the understanding around Truth and Reconciliation (and) the legacy that was left behind,”

A full schedule of this week’s events is available on the university’s website.
