LGBTQ+ advocates in Ottawa are asking the federal government to investigate Alberta and Saskatchewan laws they say have increased harassment, bullying and mental health harms for transgender people. They want members of Parliament to hear from people affected, noting that some have died by suicide since the policies were enacted.
Both provinces require parental consent for students under 16 to change their names or pronouns at school. Alberta also bars transgender athletes aged 12 and older from amateur competitive female sports and restricts gender-affirming medical care for youth.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe have invoked the notwithstanding clause to shield the laws from court challenges. Both say the school policies protect parental rights. Smith’s government says Alberta’s other measures are intended to protect females in sports and prevent youth from making rash, life-altering decisions.
