Fort McMurray’s first Walmart Supercentre is scheduled to open Oct. 22 in the Parsons Creek neighbourhood, as the retailer prepares to move operations from its downtown store on Hospital Street. The new 142,000-square-foot building began construction in September 2025 and will combine a full grocery selection with general merchandise, a pharmacy and everyday essentials.
The store will also provide pickup and delivery services. Walmart said the existing downtown location will close once operations shift to the new Supercentre, but has not confirmed what will happen to the Hospital Street property.
The move comes as Walmart expands and updates its business across Alberta. The company announced plans for new stores in Edmonton, Calgary and Fort McMurray, alongside modernization and renovation work elsewhere in the province. The Fort McMurray project is listed as a major provincial project. Alberta uses that designation for public and private sector projects valued at $5 million or more.
Fusco said the store is part of “Walmart Canada’s broader $6.5 billion investment to strengthen our store and supply chain network across Canada.” She added: “We’re excited to bring Fort McMurray customers an even better shopping experience and look forward to welcoming them to the new Supercentre.”
At the Hospital Street store, employees are preparing for the move, with empty shelves, yellow clearance signs and marked-down goods visible in its aisles. Walmart said current staff were given the chance to transfer to the new site. “All current associates were offered the opportunity to work at the new location,” Fusco said.
Hiring is continuing for a range of positions at the new store, including produce associates, cashiers and fashion associates, among other roles. Applicants can apply through Walmart Canada Careers.
Some Fort McMurray residents have followed the construction on social media, sharing glimpses of the work in progress and discussing what they hope the store will offer. The new location’s grocery department, along with its pharmacy and general merchandise, will expand the shopping options available at the site.
Walmart’s Alberta plans form part of its broader investment programme, which the company says is intended to strengthen its stores and supply chain across Canada. The opening will mark the arrival of Fort McMurray’s first Walmart Supercentre, while the company’s future plans for its former downtown premises remain undecided.
