MyCityCare has marked the start of construction on a new residential development in north Lethbridge that will add 115 rental units. The project will be next to the organization’s Lethbridge office. Its first 28 units are expected to be complete by summer 2027.
MyCityCare founder and CEO Kelly Stickel said rental availability in the city is increasing, but demand remains high. “The rate is rising as far as rental availability within our city. But it’s still a very, very big need in our city to be able to make a small dent in that is very meaningful,” Stickel said.
The organization approached the City of Lethbridge to ask which needs were greatest. The city identified housing, prompting MyCityCare to begin work on the development. The total project cost is expected to range from $50 million to $60 million, funded through private donations and loans. Donations will also help reduce living costs for residents who move in.
Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen said the project combines community donations, outside grants and work with the city to extend funding. “It’s tough for (the) city to do on the backing of taxpayers. They brought a lot of donations. They’re able to get a lot of outside grants and with work with the city to be able to help stretch that dollar,” Hyggen said.
The development is intended to support the city’s growth by providing safe, affordable housing. Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce CEO Cyndi Crane said a shortage can discourage new professionals from moving to the city. “Young families can move here and develop their family, develop their skills, develop work in the economy. But we also need that housing for seniors that are also still contributing to the economy,” Crane said.
Stickel said MyCityCare wants to identify needs and reach residents in the community. “(We’re) very passionate about being able to not have just the community come to us, but us go to the community and meet the needs in our city and identify what those needs are,” Stickel said. He added: “Housing is one of the major needs in Lethbridge. And we’re very proud to be able to have the expertise within our congregation to be able to take this on,” Stickel said.
