Alberta RCMP have charged a 21-year-old man from Child Lake First Nations with first-degree murder in connection with the 2023 shooting death of Trevor Fournier. Jardin Cardinal was arrested Saturday and remains in police custody pending a court appearance scheduled for Thursday in High Level.

High Level RCMP officers were called on July 17, 2023, to a home on Child Lake First Nations, about 712 kilometres north of Edmonton. They found the body of a man, according to a Sunday police news release. Investigators determined that Fournier, 48, had died from a gunshot wound.

The Alberta RCMP major crimes unit took over the investigation. Police later arrested Cardinal and laid the first-degree murder charge. The news release did not provide further details about the circumstances of the shooting or the alleged motive.

The case concerns a homicide in northern Alberta reported in 2023. Cardinal is scheduled to appear in High Level court on Thursday after being remanded into police custody. The police announcement identified Fournier as the victim and said investigators determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound.
