A 30-year-old Airdrie man has been charged with six counts of sexual assault after women were allegedly groped at big-box stores in the Calgary area, Alberta RCMP said Friday. The man was arrested without incident at his home Tuesday and is scheduled to appear in court next week.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Steven Browne said the cases were similar and began Aug. 12 at a Walmart in Airdrie. A woman was shopping when a man grabbed her buttocks, Browne said. “(The man) did not say anything and departed the business without a confrontation,” he said at a news conference.

Another assault was reported at the same Walmart 12 days later. Two more incidents took place Sept. 17 at a No Frills grocery store in Airdrie. The two women involved there have not been identified, and Browne asked them to contact police.

Calgary police also notified RCMP investigators about two similar incidents in Calgary, one at a Walmart and the other at a Shoppers Drug Mart. Browne said the accused did not wear a mask and was captured on video during each alleged offence. He said he did not know the motive.

RCMP are offering assistance to the women involved through the regional victim services society. “We’ve offered them the supports of the regional victim services society and again no woman wants to be inappropriately touched in any fashion,” Browne said. “It’s a criminal offence and we take that at the highest priority.”
