Coming home was the hard part. “Everyone’s creative down there. Everyone is, it’s so busy, and I love the city so much,” she said of New York. “It just sucks coming back to Alberta.” While Celestina said Alberta has talented artists and a supportive alternative fashion community, she believes larger centres such as New York and Toronto offer opportunities that can be difficult to find in smaller markets. “There are people that I know here that are very expressive with their fashion and stuff, but I definitely don’t feel the same vibe in Alberta as I would somewhere else,” she said.
Celestina, a graduate of MC College in Edmonton, has built her Princess Metalhead brand around creating garments from materials people would not expect to see on a runway. Article content Inspired by everything from steel mesh to aluminum pop tabs, she has developed a reputation for designs that blur the line between fashion, art, and armour.
Her work has earned recognition both at home and abroad. She received MC College’s Frank Cairo Award, which recognizes commitment, integrity, and respect. More recently, she was named a finalist for best sustainable fashion at Runway 7 Fashion Week in New York. “I’m very heavily influenced by making things out of something you wouldn’t normally see,” she said.
That approach has helped her stand out in a crowded industry and attract attention from runway audiences who share photos and videos of her work online. Despite appearances in New York and Toronto, Celestina’s day-to-day reality remains grounded in Alberta. She works a regular job, sews in her spare time, and said she often spends 15 to 18 hours a day developing new collections when preparing for major shows.
She also credits Edmonton designer Louise Mayhem, with whom she completed an internship and continues to work, as an important influence on her career. For now, Celestina is focused on building her audience through fashion shows, online sales, and future runway opportunities. “My whole brand message is just be unapologetic and don’t be afraid to be bold,” she said. “Be true to yourself and just own it.” TWilkie@postmedia.com Article content Share this article in your social network Share this Story : Sherwood Park News Copy Link Email X Reddit Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Comments You must be logged in to join the discussion or read more comments.
