The Northwest Territories will end seasonal time changes and keep its new permanent time standard, known as Northwest Territories time, year-round, the territorial government says. Clocks will not be set back one hour on Nov. 1, when the next seasonal change would have taken place. The territory will share a common time with Alberta and Saskatchewan.

For most residents, the transition is expected to be simple, the government says. Devices running the latest software are expected to receive the time zone update once system providers release it.

The decision follows public feedback in 2022, when more than 3,500 residents took part in an online survey. More than 87 per cent supported ending the twice-yearly clock changes. Respondents most commonly favoured keeping mountain daylight time year-round, which aligns with the new time zone.

“Ending seasonal time change gives residents what they’ve asked us for,” Premier R.J. Simpson said in a news release Wednesday. “This change provides greater consistency for people, families, organizations and businesses across the territory.”
