The Global Business Forum has opened in Banff, where participants are meeting under the theme “thriving in chaos” amid turmoil in the international order. The conference is in its 27th year and is held annually at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in the Rocky Mountains west of Calgary, a stately hotel set in an alpine landscape.

Lois Mitchell, the forum’s co-chair and a former Alberta lieutenant-governor, said participants have rarely seen such turmoil and rupture in the international order. Sessions are scheduled to examine global security, strained Canada-U.S. relations, space travel, artificial intelligence and other topics.

Among the speakers are Artemis II astronaut Jeremy Hansen, former Canadian ambassador to the United States Kirsten Hillman and Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy. Executives from Shell Canada, Canadian National Railway Co. and Telus Corp. are also scheduled to share their perspectives.
