A 40-year-old Lloydminster man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder after a fatal shooting in the city on Monday. RCMP identified the victim as 22-year-old Nolan Whitestone of Lloydminster. CTV News Edmonton reported the victim’s surname as Whitstone.

Police were dispatched just before 11:10 a.m. to a shooting on 50th Avenue near 47 Street, according to an Alberta RCMP release. CTV reported officers were called shortly after 11 a.m. Emergency crews attended, but the victim died at the scene.

Alberta RCMP’s major crimes unit took over the investigation and canvassed the area for video footage and witness information. Investigators identified the suspect as Randy Lysohirka, 40, of Lloydminster, and issued a warrant for his arrest. CTV reported officers located and arrested Lysohirka sometime Wednesday.

Lysohirka is being held and is to appear before a justice of the peace. A future court date has not yet been determined, CTV reported. The Edmonton Journal reported that he remains charged with second-degree murder in connection with Whitestone’s death.

Alberta RCMP Cpl. Mathew Howell told Postmedia earlier in the week that the two men were seen in an altercation outside and had a “confrontation on foot” when the shooting occurred. Howell said Lysohirka was known to police and that witness conversations and public assistance helped investigators identify him quickly.

“He was known to police, and with the help from the public, and being able to speak with witnesses, we were able to identify him quite quickly,” Howell said in a phone call with Postmedia on Wednesday.

Before the arrest was reported, police described Lysohirka as having a light complexion, standing five-foot-seven and weighing 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Howell said he was still at large at that time and urged the public not to approach him if they encountered him. Anyone with information about his whereabouts was asked to contact Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8300 or their local police.
