Wood Buffalo RCMP is asking the public to help identify a person wanted in connection with multiple suspected arsons in downtown Fort McMurray. On Wednesday, Mounties released two images taken from surveillance video recorded around the time of the fires. The incidents occurred Friday night and early Saturday, while residents slept.
Police were first called Saturday morning to a fire involving a flat-deck trailer at a home on Alberta Drive. Investigators suspected arson and later learned that multiple vehicles and other personal property had also been damaged by fire along Alberta Drive and Poplar Crescent between midnight Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday. The RCMP has not confirmed how many residents or homes were affected, or specified the neighbourhoods involved beyond those streets.
One resident, Alana Mouland, woke Saturday to find her rocking chair completely burned in her backyard. The fires have left affected residents fearful and seeking answers. In a related report, residents described the situation as “It could have been a lot worse.”
Anyone with information about the person is asked to call Wood Buffalo RCMP at 780-788-4040. The report included files from Hannah Kavanagh. Edmonton Journal also listed a separate related story about Northern Alberta communities’ concern over a week-long foul odour from an oilsands site, with speculation about a benzene leak debunked.
