A man fatally shot by Edmonton police at a Donsdale home on Sept. 13 was carrying a shotgun, Alberta’s police watchdog said Wednesday. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said officers responded to a domestic violence call at about 10 a.m. in the southwest Edmonton neighbourhood.

When Edmonton police arrived, they secured the scene and helped two women and an infant who had already escaped the home, ASIRT said in a release. A man then came out of the residence with a shotgun. Police ordered him to drop the weapon before shooting him, according to the watchdog.

Tactical paramedics used life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene. One woman who remained inside the home was treated in hospital for a gunshot wound, while the infant sustained other physical injuries. The injuries to both were not life-threatening, and each was later released from hospital.

ASIRT said it will continue investigating the shooting and provide further information as it becomes available. The agency’s account was released Wednesday, following the Sept. 13 police response.

The incident began with a domestic violence call in Donsdale. Police found two women and an infant outside the home after they had escaped, then encountered the armed man as he emerged from the residence. The watchdog’s release described the sequence leading to the shooting and the injuries reported after the response.
