OilersNation has reported:
The Edmonton Oilers loaned forward James Stefan to the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors on Sunday, Oct. 18, after their 6-2 win over the Utah Mammoth on Saturday. The move came after Stefan was injured to begin the season. The Oilers announced the transaction in a post on X: “The #Oilers have loaned forward James Stefan to the @Condors.”
Stefan, born in Atlanta, Georgia, is the son of Patrik Štefan, the first overall pick in the 1999 NHL draft. His father played in Atlanta at the time of James’s birth. Patrik Štefan is also remembered for failing to ice the puck with the Dallas Stars during the 2006-07 season.
James Stefan played most of his junior career with the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winter Hawks. Across 254 regular-season games, he scored 11 goals and 256 points. In 38 postseason games, he added 17 goals and 33 points.
Stefan went undrafted and signed an entry-level contract with Edmonton in March 2024. He made his professional debut in the 2024-25 season, playing 45 games for the Condors and recording three goals. He also spent time in the ECHL that season, where he scored six goals and nine points in 12 games, then added four goals and six points in 13 playoff games.
Last season, Stefan spent most of his time with the ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets, scoring 17 goals and 34 points over 38 games. He appeared in six games with Bakersfield but did not record a point. His loan returns him to the Condors as he works through his second season expected to be spent mainly with the club.
Bakersfield has opened the season 2-3-0 through five games. The team’s four points are tied for the fewest in the Pacific Division. Forwards Quinn Hutson and Aku Räty, along with defenceman Damien Carfagna, have delivered strong performances for the Condors so far.
The move gives Bakersfield another skilled forward, though Stefan remains a long way from challenging for a place with Edmonton or establishing himself as a full-time National Hockey League player. His progress with the Condors will be a measure of how he develops in his second season primarily in the AHL.
