Minor defects in optical fibres, chips and other devices that guide light can scatter photons and disrupt their paths. A new study demonstrates a method to reveal properties that help light-wave behaviour withstand such flaws in certain systems.
The researchers say the approach could speed the search for new kinds of electronics and optical technologies. It could also contribute to more reliable quantum devices.
