OilersNation has reported:
Connor McDavid scored twice and set up three goals as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Utah Mammoth 6-2 on Saturday evening, improving their season record to 6-1-1. Edmonton built a 5-0 lead before Utah scored twice early in the third period, then McDavid restored the four-goal margin with a breakaway goal.
McDavid opened the scoring less than a minute into the game. Sent forward on a rush, he used his speed to get behind Utah’s defence, waited out goaltender Karel Vejmelka and put the puck in the net.
The Oilers made it 2-0 with just under seven minutes left in the first period. Seconds into a power play, McDavid found Zach Hyman alone in front, and the returning winger struck the puck into the net. The goal was Hyman’s first of the season and came in his first game back in the lineup.
Less than a minute later, Edmonton extended the lead to three. Utah won a faceoff in the offensive zone, but a Mammoth defender mishandled the puck at the blue line. Mathieu Joseph collected it for a breakaway and shot above Vejmelka’s glove for his first goal in nearly a year. The goal proved to be the game winner.
The first period ended 3-0. Midway through the second, Evan Bouchard’s point shot did not reach the net, and the puck bounced out to Kasperi Kapanen in the slot. Kapanen fired it off the post and in for his third goal of the season, giving Edmonton a 4-0 lead.
With about six minutes remaining in the period, Mattias Ekholm forced a turnover during a Utah rush. McDavid got to the puck first and sent Leon Draisaitl away on a breakaway. Draisaitl scored his sixth goal of the season to put Edmonton ahead 5-0.
Utah scored twice 95 seconds apart early in the third period, making the game 5-2 and briefly narrowing the gap. McDavid ended the Mammoth’s momentum with a breakaway goal against Sebastian Cossa, sealing the 6-2 result and completing his five-point night.
McDavid now has six goals and 23 points this season. His current scoring pace projects to 242 points over the season. Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin, McDavid’s linemates, each recorded two points, while McDavid and Draisaitl both finished plus-4.
Bouchard recorded one assist and was plus-3. His defence partner, Ekholm, also finished plus-3 and added an assist. Hyman scored in his return, Kapanen recorded his third goal, and Joseph’s breakaway marker was his first in nearly a year.
Trent Frederic fought Jack McBain in what the account of the game described as a strong bout. The fight followed McBain’s hit on Draisaitl on Thursday and took place despite Edmonton’s 3-0 lead at the time. The writer said the fight would almost certainly rank as the Oilers’ top fight of the season on HockeyFights, where they had written about the five highest-rated Oilers fights over the previous two off-seasons.
Tristan Jarry stopped 26 of 28 shots for a .929 save percentage. The netminder had also stopped all but one of the 20 shots he faced against the San Jose Sharks the previous Saturday.
The game took place shortly after an event in Wainwright, Alberta. Before discussing the hockey, the writer offered condolences to those affected by what happened there, without providing further details.
Edmonton returns home to begin a five-game home stand. The Oilers’ first game on the stand is against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday at 7 p.m. MT.
