CTV News Edmonton has reported:

Next Step Thrift, a new thrift store on 99 Street in Edmonton, is supporting vulnerable youth through its sales and employment opportunities. The boutique-style shop is a revamped Second Chance Thrift Shop in a new location, and each purchase supports Hope Mission’s prevention programs.

The store also hosts an employment program for young people and caregivers through the Tegler Youth Centre. Service manager Lauren Reid spoke at the store’s Saturday grand opening, describing how customers and donors contribute to the program.

“Whether you donate items or you stop by the store, everyone who comes as a customer is really coming alongside the youth that are served through this space,” Reid said. She described the two-part work program as a “gift” to run amid the need for entry-level positions in Canada.

“It’s such a gift to be able to provide them with an experience that they can put on their resume for future jobs … We’ve got trainings on effective decision making, all kinds of things, just trying to set them up for success,” Reid said. “We really want to walk with these kids.”

Next Step Thrift is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The report included files from CTV News Edmonton’s Curtis Goodrum.
