Slashdot has reported:

Google is expanding its Android Earthquake Alerts System from 98 to more than 200 regions worldwide. The system uses smartphone sensors to detect early earthquake activity and warn users before potentially dangerous shaking begins. Google also plans to add information and guidance to its Be Ready alerts.

The system has three alert levels. Be Aware gives a straightforward notice when light shaking is estimated and an earthquake has been detected nearby. Be Ready alerts users to stronger shaking and tells them to prepare to act. Take Action is a full-screen alert for moderate to heavy shaking, with immediate advice on staying safe.

Google said the enhanced Be Ready alert will include estimated earthquake magnitudes, information about the epicentre, maps of affected areas and additional safety guidance. “In the coming months, you'll see a map with a radius of where we've detected shaking, estimated earthquake magnitude, action you can take, and a button to learn more about the earthquake as information comes in,” the company said in a blog post.
