Slashdot has reported:

Astronomers have identified a white dwarf that may be the first credibly reported genuinely green star. WD J1330+6435 is about 326 light-years from Earth, and researchers say its colour may result from rocky material accreted from a planetary companion.

The cool white dwarf’s atmosphere has been enriched with calcium, lithium and sodium. The team’s model suggests the composition gives the star a green hue. Researchers said no other living or dead star has been credibly reported as green.

“The traces of sodium in the atmosphere of this white dwarf absorb the orange part of the spectrum, leaving behind a ghostly green glow,” Hollands said. “Imagine standing on a planet and looking up at a green star. It feels like something out of science fiction.”

The researchers also found what may be the reddest star ever observed: white dwarf WD J1011+2845, located 48 light-years away. The findings have been published in the journal RAS Techniques and Instruments.
