RaceFans has reported:

Dan Wheldon, an IndyCar champion and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, was killed in a crash during the season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway 15 years ago, on Oct. 16, 2011. He was racing in the middle of a 34-car pack when he became involved in a multi-car accident and was launched into the fencing on the outside of the oval. IndyCar has not raced at the speedway since.

Wheldon’s wife, Susie, gave birth to the couple’s second son earlier in 2011. Both of their sons later went into racing, and their eldest, Sebastian, is scheduled to compete in Formula 3 next year.

Wheldon’s achievements included winning the 2005 IndyCar championship and two Indianapolis 500 races. His second victory at the Brickyard came earlier in 2011, in what was described as one of the most astonishing finishes in the event’s history.

The anniversary was marked on Oct. 16, 2026. RaceFans published its item at 9:59 p.m. that day and displayed a 10 p.m. timestamp. It was written by Keith Collantine, who established RaceFans in 2005 under its original name, F1 Fanatic. Collantine, a former motoring journalist, began running the site full-time in 2010 to focus on motor racing.

The page also listed other IndyCar coverage, including the death of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johncock at age 90; Alex Zanardi, an IndyCar champion and Paralympic gold medallist, at age 59; Alex Palou clinching his fifth championship in seven years; and the debut at Indianapolis of the new chassis for 2028. IndyCar has revealed the lighter IR-28 chassis for that season.
