CTV News Calgary has reported:
The owner of a dog that killed a mule deer while off-leash in Canmore earlier this week has been charged with multiple offences under Alberta’s Provincial Parks Act, the Ministry of Forestry and Parks said Thursday. The charges require a mandatory court appearance.
The Town of Canmore said in a social media post that an off-leash golden retriever attacked and killed the deer near Canmore Engine Bridge on Sunday between 10 and 11 a.m. Municipal law enforcement attended the scene and contacted the owner, described as a woman wearing a black puffy jacket who left with the dog.
The ministry said the owner has since come forward and been interviewed by conservation officers. Ministry spokesperson Riley Gough said the owner’s identity would not be shared. “We can confirm that the individual has been charged with multiple offences under the Provincial Parks Act, all of which require a mandatory court appearance,” Gough wrote.
Gough said conservation officers will work with the RCMP and the Town of Canmore on any further charges that may be required. “It is critical that pets remain leashed and under control at all times while in provincial parks,” he said.
