Slashdot has reported:
Tesla unveiled a redesigned Roadster concept that drove up a ramp, used thrusters to flip in midair and land, then completed a barrel roll over the company’s vehicle lineup before landing on the ground. Tesla also said the car accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 0.81 seconds. The event recording is available on X.
The first ramp demonstration began with the car travelling up a vertical ramp that transitioned to a horizontal surface. For a second run, the Roadster left the ramp and used its thrusters to flip before making a controlled landing. It then performed a barrel roll above the rest of Tesla’s lineup and landed again without issue.
Tesla is calling the vehicle simply the Roadster, rather than Roadster 2.0 or CyberRoadster. It was developed in collaboration with SpaceX and has a more angular design than the sports car Tesla showed in 2017. The new model arrives nearly a decade after the company first presented a Roadster.
The concept uses 10 cold-gas thrusters powered by two compressed-air tanks, each with a capacity of 600 litres, for acceleration and manoeuvring in midair. Underbody suction fans reportedly produce as much as 2Gs of downforce while the car is stationary, and an active rear spoiler adjusts the aerodynamics in real time. The vehicle also has steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire and throttle-by-wire technology.
Tesla plans three versions. The Performance variant requires a $50,000 deposit, while the $250,000 Thrust model is described as capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in less than one second. The Rocket is an invite-only, single-seat version that Tesla says will be capable of flight.
Production is not expected until 2028. Tesla has not released the Roadster’s range, horsepower, battery capacity or motor configuration. The reported performance claims and design details were presented at the unveiling, while those specifications remain undisclosed.
