Physicists at Auburn University used flashes of laser light to organize tiny electrically charged islands inside a crystal. Their discovery helps answer a decades-old question about how the material arranges itself.
The work also shows how light could be used to control the material’s behaviour, offering a step toward exploring new technologies for processing and storing information.
