Global News Edmonton has reported:

The Saskatchewan Roughriders face a difficult finish to the regular season after losing four consecutive games, with a playoff berth still within reach when they host the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday. Saskatchewan is 8-8, while Montreal is 13-3 and has already secured first place in the East Division. The game completes a home-and-home series after Montreal won 44-24 at Molson Stadium last week, in the teams’ first meeting since last year’s Grey Cup game.

A Saskatchewan victory, combined with a loss by either Calgary or Winnipeg, would send the Roughriders to the playoffs. The Blue Bombers, also 8-8, visit the Edmonton Elks on Friday night, while the Stampeders, 8-9, host the B.C. Lions on Saturday night. Neither Saskatchewan nor Calgary can host a playoff game.

Edmonton, 12-4, can clinch first in the West and host the division final on Nov. 7 with a win over Winnipeg or a B.C. loss. The Lions, 10-6, can secure a home playoff game with a victory or a Winnipeg loss. Winnipeg can claim a post-season berth with a win or a Calgary loss.

The East Division standings are settled. The Toronto Argonauts, 9-7, will finish second and host the division semifinal on Oct. 31 against the West crossover team. Toronto plays the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night in Ottawa, while Montreal’s visit to Saskatchewan is the other key game for teams still chasing playoff positions.

Montreal’s offence overwhelmed Saskatchewan in last week’s meeting. Starting quarterback Davis Alexander threw for 403 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. The Alouettes converted 13 of 21 second-down opportunities and produced 524 net offensive yards.

Alexander leads the CFL in passing yards with 5,247, touchdown passes with 35 and completion percentage at 72.1 per cent. It remains unclear how much he and Montreal’s other starters will play. The Alouettes average a league-high 33.8 offensive points per game and rank second in net offence at 430.6 yards and passing at 334.4 yards. They also average 106.1 rushing yards per game.

Montreal leads the league with 37 completions of 30 or more yards and ranks second in fewest such passes allowed, with 16, one behind Hamilton. Canadian receiver Tyson Philpot needs 228 receiving yards over the Alouettes’ final two games to surpass Allen Pitts’s single-season record of 2,036 yards.

Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris completed 23 of 33 passes for 243 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against Montreal. He is second in the CFL with 5,117 passing yards and has completed 70.1 per cent of his passes. Harris has thrown 31 touchdowns, but his 14 interceptions are tied for the second-most among CFL starters.

The Roughriders rank fourth in passing at 320.8 yards per game, fifth in offensive points at 27.5 and fifth in net offensive yards at 401.6. Their rushing average of 89.8 yards is seventh in the league. Saskatchewan is 5-3 at home and is expected to be the more urgent side. The game preview picked Saskatchewan to win.

In Friday’s game in Ottawa, Chad Kelly is expected to start for Toronto after practising fully this week. He missed the Argonauts’ 24-17 home loss to B.C. on Oct. 3 because of a right-hand injury, and the team is coming off a bye week. How much Kelly and other Toronto starters will play is uncertain.

Newcomer Bryson Barnes is set to start for Ottawa, which is 0-16, and is expected to start in the Redblacks’ regular-season finale in Hamilton on Oct. 24. The six-foot-one, 213-pound quarterback has mainly played in short-yardage situations. He has scored nine rushing touchdowns and completed 10 of 13 passes for 110 yards with one interception. The preview picked Toronto.

Winnipeg visits Edmonton on Friday as the Elks aim to sweep the three-game season series and pursue first place in the West. Edmonton has won two straight and six of its last seven games. Winnipeg veteran Zach Collaros returned last week after missing two games with a head injury, throwing for 349 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-28 win over Calgary. The Bombers are 6-4 with Collaros at quarterback. CFL rushing leader Brady Oliveira, with 1,307 yards, could receive more work after carrying eight times for 40 yards against Calgary. The preview picked Edmonton.

B.C. visits Calgary on Saturday after winning four straight and nine of its last 10 games. Nathan Rourke threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns in the Lions’ 41-20 home victory over Ottawa last week. Zander Horvath ran for 89 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his totals to 18 rushing scores and 21 touchdowns overall. He needs one more rushing touchdown to tie Mike Pringle’s single-season record and two more total touchdowns to tie Milt Stegall’s overall mark.

Calgary missed a chance to clinch a playoff place last week when it lost to Winnipeg. Vernon Adams Jr. passed for 284 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 38 yards on five carries. If the Stampeders lose to B.C., they will need Saskatchewan to lose its remaining games to reach the playoffs. The preview picked B.C. Last week’s picks were 3-1, bringing the season record to 50-23. The Canadian Press first published the report on Oct. 14, 2026.
