Edmonton Journal and CTV News Edmonton have reported:
A 29-year-old man has been charged after a tent at the Israel pavilion was slashed with a knife during Edmonton’s Heritage Festival on Aug. 3. Edmonton police said their investigation found insufficient evidence that the incident was motivated by hate.
Police said the man climbed over metal security fencing around the pavilion at about 3 p.m. at the festival in Hawrelak Park. Festival security guards detained him until Edmonton Police Service members on site arrived and arrested him.
The EPS Crimes Unit investigated the incident, according to one police account, while another identified the investigating unit as the hate crimes unit. Both accounts said investigators found too little evidence to indicate a hate motivation.
Abdimalik Jama faces charges of mischief under $5,000 and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was released on conditions.
The charges follow the summer tent slashing at the Israel pavilion. Related coverage cited an earlier report that an Israel protest at the Heritage Festival was constitutionally protected, according to the city, as well as a report about a man arrested after a knife attack at an Israeli tent at the festival.
