OilersNation has reported:
The Detroit Red Wings have signed winger Alex DeBrincat to a seven-year contract extension, taking a possible Edmonton Oilers trade target off the market. The deal will pay DeBrincat $13 million per year, a substantial increase from the four-year contract he is finishing this season, which carries an average annual value of $7.875 million.
The contract will be paid out in salary, a less common structure for high-value deals in the NHL. According to PuckPedia, it includes a full no-movement clause for its first four years, followed by modified no-move clauses in the final three seasons.
DeBrincat, 28, is from Farmington Hills, Mich., and is coming off a 2025-26 campaign in which he matched his career high with 41 goals. He also set personal bests with 44 assists and 85 points.
Detroit is the third NHL team DeBrincat has played for. The Chicago Blackhawks selected him 39th overall in the 2016 draft, and he spent his first five seasons with the club before being dealt to the Ottawa Senators ahead of the 2022-23 season for first-, second- and third-round draft picks.
The Senators traded DeBrincat to Detroit the following summer. The return included Dominik Kubalik, Donovan Sebrango, and a first- and fourth-round draft pick.
DeBrincat was approaching the final year of his contract as the March 1, 2027, trade deadline neared. Had the Red Wings not reached an extension, he would have been among the leading names on many trade boards, and Edmonton likely would have been one of the teams contacting Detroit interim general manager Shawn Horcoff.
The agreement comes as Detroit faces another contract question involving defenceman Simon Edvinsson, a restricted free agent who remains unsigned. The uncertainty dates to the end of last season, when the Red Wings missed the playoffs, captain Dylan Larkin requested a trade, and Steve Yzerman stepped down as general manager on July 15.
Edvinsson had been thought to be waiting for the general manager situation to be resolved. Horcoff has since taken over on an interim basis, but the club has yet to sign the defenceman despite having $17.258 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia.
Horcoff said Wednesday that the team wants Edvinsson in Detroit and dismissed the possibility of moving him. “I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson,” Horcoff said. “Not something I’m entertaining. We want to sign him.”
Edvinsson, 23, was drafted sixth overall by Detroit in 2021. He has played 175 games over the past four seasons, scoring 19 goals and 60 points.
He split time between the NHL and the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids team, during his first two seasons, appearing in nine and 16 NHL games, respectively. Over the past two years, he has been a regular in Detroit’s lineup, recording 16 goals and 56 points in 150 games.
