Phys.org has reported:

Controlling transitions in materials with coupled structural and electronic changes could produce built-in memory, a step toward technologies that emulate neurons and synapses. Understanding and controlling phase transitions are fundamental to physics and central to many technological revolutions.

There is strong interest in these materials for neuromorphic, or brain-like, computing. Controlling their transition plasticity could enable memory within the materials.
