Phys.org has reported:

Networks of flowing water and other fluids can store information about their past, Yale researchers say, in a way similar to a computer chip. Their findings, published in Physical Review X, could help steer robots and offer insight into some simple organisms.

The researchers compared the effect to folds left in crumpled sheets and footprints in recently trodden sand, where materials retain marks of their histories.
