CTV News Edmonton has reported:

Connor McDavid scored once and added two assists in the first period, then helped set up an empty-net goal as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 on Tuesday. McDavid finished with four points, while the Oilers extended their winning streak to five games and improved to 5-0-1 this season. They have scored at least three goals in each of their six games.

Vasily Podkolzin scored twice, his sixth and seventh goals of the season, and Leon Draisaitl also scored. Devon Levi stopped 39 shots for Edmonton, which was outshot 40-16. Evan Bouchard recorded two assists. The Oilers began the season without injured forwards Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Edmonton opened the scoring when McDavid drew Cody Ceci out of position and passed low to Draisaitl, who scored with a quick wrist shot. A minute later, McDavid sped past Mikey Anderson and fired on Darcy Kuemper; Podkolzin scored on the rebound. Late in the period, after Los Angeles had kept Edmonton in its own end for nearly two full shifts, McDavid came off the bench, took Ty Emberson’s pass at the blue line in stride and scored his fourth goal of the season.

Kuemper was replaced by Anton Forsberg to begin the second period. Brandt Clarke scored late in the frame with a long shot through traffic, his first goal since the Kings’ young defensive cornerstone signed a five-year, $37 million deal last June. McDavid and Draisaitl assisted on Podkolzin’s empty-net goal.

McDavid has recorded at least three points in a single period 33 times during his 11-year career, including 10 first-period performances. The six-time Art Ross Trophy winner, awarded to the NHL’s top scorer, has 16 points this season and five multi-point games.

The Kings dropped to 0-3-2 in the first season under coach Peter Laviolette. Los Angeles and Philadelphia are the NHL’s only winless teams. The Kings are adapting to a new direction under Laviolette, who is seeking more offensive aggression from a team that has played deliberate, defence-first hockey for nearly two decades.

The Oilers are scheduled to host the Utah Mammoth on Thursday. Los Angeles will host the Boston Bruins on Saturday.
