Connor McDavid marked his 800th NHL game with a goal and four assists as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 on Tuesday evening. The victory completed a sweep of the team’s California road trip, gave Edmonton a fifth consecutive win and improved its season record to 5-0-1. The Oilers remain the only NHL team without a regulation loss this season.

Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring midway through the first period after Edmonton sustained pressure in the Kings’ zone. McDavid collected the puck near the point, drove toward the slot and passed to Draisaitl, who beat Los Angeles goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Draisaitl, the 2024-25 Rocket Richard Trophy winner, put the Oilers ahead 1-0.

A Kings penalty soon gave Edmonton’s power play an opportunity to extend the lead. McDavid fired on Kuemper, who made the save, but the rebound went to Vasily Podkolzin in the slot. The Russian winger scored to make it 2-0, his sixth goal in six games.

McDavid added his fourth goal of the season before the first period ended. With about four minutes remaining, the Kings had controlled play following Podkolzin’s goal, but Ty Emberson sent a long pass to McDavid. The captain raced past Los Angeles’s defence and beat Kuemper, recording the 413th goal of his career in his 800th game.

Los Angeles scored late in the second period after Draisaitl could not clear the puck from Edmonton’s zone. The Kings capitalized against Devon Levi, whose view was screened, to cut the Oilers’ lead to 3-1. The score remained there until Podkolzin added an empty-net goal with just over two minutes left, his second of the game and seventh of the season.

The final shot count reflected how much pressure the Kings applied after Edmonton’s early scoring. Los Angeles outshot the Oilers 11-7 in the first period, then sent 18 shots toward Levi in the second and 11 in the third. The Kings finished with 40 shots to Edmonton’s 16.

Levi stopped 39 of those 40 shots, finishing with a .975 save percentage. Across his past three games, following a difficult Oilers debut at the start of the month, he has saved 87 of 91 shots for a .956 save percentage. Edmonton was heavily outshot in each of his last two starts, but won both games.

Podkolzin’s seven goals through six games mark a sharp early-season pace. His production projects to 98 goals across an 84-game season, a rate he is not expected to maintain. He is 13 goals short of the career-high 19 he recorded in 2025-26.

McDavid’s four-point outing put him atop the league scoring list with 17 points. Evan Bouchard, who recorded two points against Los Angeles, was next with 14. The Oilers’ first line drove much of their offence, but had slightly less than 40 per cent of the expected-goal share; Edmonton’s other three lines performed worse by that measure.

The win came despite the Oilers being outplayed for much of the game after their two goals in a little over a minute. Edmonton’s next game is at home against the Utah Mammoth on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT.
