🔗 Save $6,000 A Year with My Complete Amish Home-Saving Method I teach: https://eliasyoder.com You have seen the advertisement. A little box that plugs into a socket on your wall, with a light on the front, that will lower your bill by a third, clean up your dirty power, and protect your appliances. Seventy percent off but only today.
News badges along the bottom. A counter ticking down the last eleven in stock, which has been ticking down for two years. And a graph with a line going sharply down and no numbers on either side of it.
I will be square with you. I cannot tell you what is inside that box. I am a farmer and I will not pretend to know one part from another.
But you do not need to know. There is a referee already bolted to the outside of your house. It has been there since the day the place was built, and it will settle this argument in a week for nothing.
My grandfather taught me how to handle a man selling something, and he did it without arguing with one. A fellow came through market with a powder for the stock in a paper packet with a cow on the front. I was eleven and I thought it was the finest thing I had ever heard.
My grandfather listened to the whole speech, then asked me one question: what would we weigh? Then he bought the powder, gave it to half the cows and not the other half, and wrote the milk down twice a day for a month in a little book with a pencil on a string. At the end he turned the book round so I could read two columns of figures that were the same.
What we go through: What your meter actually counts, and why it is the only number that sends you a bill How to read yours, dials or digital, and how to turn units into dollars a day The seven day test, and the one mistake that ruins it for almost everybody Why the weather moves a bill harder than any gadget could, and how to work around that What your house uses while everybody in it is asleep, and why that figure shocks people Why the little meter they plug into a socket in the advert is not the meter that bills you The graph with no numbers, and why the woman in the testimonial is probably not lying to you The three questions to ask about any gadget anybody ever sells you How to talk to the relative who already bought four of them without starting a fight Said plainly on safety: a cheap electronic device made to a price and left plugged into a wall every hour of the day and night is a fire risk.
Look for a certification mark from a proper testing house, and if there is none, I would not have it in the wall of a house where people sleep. And if it is warm to the hand after a day, unplug it. What I cannot help with: I am not an electrician.
If your bill has genuinely jumped and you cannot account for it, that is usually something with a heating element in it, and a great many power companies will send somebody to look over a house for nothing or lend you a meter. It is worth asking. There is no scheme in any of this and nobody arranged anything.
The money simply runs the other way. A box like that costs a few dollars to make and sells for forty, and every dollar of the difference can go into advertising it. The meter on the side of your house has no advertising budget at all.
Tonight, go and find the meter on your house. Just find it. Then read it, write the number down with the date and time, and read it again tomorrow at the same hour.
That difference is your house in one number, for the first time in your life. Tell me in the comments what county you are in and how old your house is. And tell me this: what was your number?
What did your house use in one day? Next time I want to show you where the money in a cold house is actually going, and you can find every bit of it with a candle and twenty minutes of walking slowly round the inside of your own walls. I gathered the whole of it into a book at eliasyoder dot com.
The people who built this country with their hands knew that, and we are only just starting to remember it. #EliasYoder...
