CTV News Edmonton has reported:
Construction began Tuesday on the $2.9-billion Yellowhead Mainline gas pipeline east of Edmonton. The 235-kilometre line will run between the Peers and Fort Saskatchewan areas, delivering one billion cubic feet of natural gas daily to Dow Chemical’s Path2Zero facility and other regional customers, including residential users.
Announced in 2024, the project is expected to be operational by the end of 2027, according to the Government of Alberta’s major projects website. The province estimates construction will create 2,000 direct jobs. ATCO said the line will add capacity to Alberta’s natural gas system and is expected to indirectly create thousands more jobs through downstream economic growth.
“By strengthening our natural gas infrastructure, we are creating the conditions for greater industrial development, increased economic activity and a more competitive economy,” Premier Danielle Smith said in a media release. “This project alone will enable about $20 billion of investments in Alberta, including the DOW Fort Saskatchewan Path2Zero project.”
The project was proposed by Canadian Utilities Ltd., which is owned by ATCO Ltd. More information about the pipeline is available on ATCO’s website.
