Phys.org has reported:
Researchers are using magnetic sculpting to turn fields from a single source into predetermined shapes with mathematical precision. Tailored magnetic fields are needed in MRI scanners, particle accelerators, atomic clocks and future quantum computers.
Creating fields with specific shapes and properties currently requires researchers and engineers to design specialized, carefully optimized magnets or large systems of coils for each application. The process is complex and resource-intensive.
