Slashdot has reported:
Firefox 158 is now available with JPEG XL image support enabled by default, making .jxl images a standard browser format rather than an experimental feature. The browser also adds “image/jxl” to its default HTTP Accept header for image requests, alongside formats such as WebP, JPEG, PNG and GIF.
Earlier Firefox releases kept JPEG XL behind an experimental option. The change gives websites a signal through the request header that Firefox can accept JPEG XL images. The report describes the format as an alternative to the other common image types.
The release also updates Smart Window, allowing users to fill forms faster when they click a form field or choose Fill from sources. For developers, Firefox 158 adds support for CSS typed arithmetic. This allows functions such as calc() to divide two values of the same data type even when they use different units.
Developer changes and release binaries are available through their respective links. The information was relayed by Slashdot from Phoronix, which said Firefox 158 was ready with JPEG XL support.
