CTV News Edmonton has reported:

Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society plans to shut down its Kahkiyaw and Sacred Circle programs in December and pause some upcoming community events after the contracts for the programs end in 2026. The Indigenous organization, which provides resources for youth and families, said funding cuts are expected to affect more than 330 families who use its services.

In a social media statement earlier this week, Bent Arrow described the change as a “difficult period of change.” The organization said it submitted a proposal through a request for proposal process but was unsuccessful. “This is a reality all non-profits face when they apply for funding. Our non-profit sector is filled with great organizations doing impactful work, and not all of them will receive the funding they apply for,” the statement said.

The Great Pumpkin Event, Community Christmas Party and Round Dance are among the events being paused. Bent Arrow said, “We know these events have become something our community looks forward to and pausing them is not a decision we make lightly.”

The Alberta government said the funding changes stem from a competitive procurement process launched in April 2026, which gave service proponents the opportunity to bid on services in the Edmonton area. “While some services may be delivered by different providers, overall funding for family intervention services, and the level of Indigenous-led service remain unchanged. Families can expect the same high-quality supports that promote safety, well-being, and positive outcomes,” said Samuel Basden, the province’s children and family services press secretary.

Bent Arrow was unavailable for an interview or further comment on the service cuts beyond its statement. It is scheduled to host an open house Wednesday for families affected by the changes.
