Researchers are investigating how to selectively control tiny defects in diamonds while leaving other defects intact. The work focuses on atomic-scale imperfections that can give the material new optical and electronic properties.

Some diamond defects can serve as quantum systems, but controlling them without disturbing others remains a challenge. The research describes an interest in these imperfections rather than diamond’s commonly valued perfection.
