RaceFans has reported:
Max Verstappen took pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix sprint race on Oct. 9, beating George Russell to the front of the grid, while stewards prepared to investigate whether the Red Bull driver passed Lewis Hamilton under yellow flags. Charles Leclerc was third. Russell has a power unit change penalty that will be applied to the grid for the grand prix, according to the grid report.
Verstappen claimed provisional pole from Leclerc with his only lap in SQ3. Russell then produced a fast lap in his Mercedes to take the other front-row spot. The qualifying session took place in Singapore and was reported at 2:43 p.m. and 2:44 p.m. local publication time, with the pole report updated at 2:49 p.m. Keith Collantine wrote both RaceFans reports.
The incident under review followed a crash by Sergio Perez at Turn 5 during the opening qualifying round, SQ1. Perez was able to drive his Cadillac out of the barrier, but its front wing was hanging off; part of it later came loose and left debris on the approach to Turn 8. As the field reached the yellow flag, Verstappen passed Hamilton’s Ferrari, then immediately told his team over the radio that he suspected he had broken the rules. The stewards said they would investigate after the session and confirmed they would take no action against Perez.
The crash interrupted SQ1, but all 22 drivers took part in the restart. Neither Cadillac advanced, and both drivers qualified ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr., who will start last in his Williams. Arvid Lindblad, Verstappen’s Racing Bulls team-mate, was eliminated in SQ1, while Liam Lawson secured eighth on the grid. Lawson benefited when Isack Hadjar ran wide at the final corner, exceeded track limits and lost his lap time.
A timing fault also disrupted the session at the end of SQ1. Several drivers’ lap times did not appear on screen, while messages saying “overtake enabled” and “overtake disabled” were displayed incorrectly. The FIA initially said it was “investigating whether we can proceed with the rest of the session”. Some drivers eliminated in the first round were unsure of their qualifying positions when it ended, but SQ2 began soon afterwards.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who began the weekend using Mercedes’ upgrade package, qualified seventh. Ferrari and McLaren drivers split him from team-mate Russell. Hamilton started his final lap strongly but lost time after several snaps of oversteer in the middle sector. Both McLaren drivers beat his time, leaving him sixth.
Franco Colapinto did not join his team-mate in SQ3 and will start immediately behind him. The Audi and Haas drivers also exited in SQ2, along with Fernando Alonso, who had left his own team-mate behind in SQ1. The source reports did not provide a complete list of grid positions or identify the affected Audi and Haas drivers.
The sprint grid report listed Verstappen provisionally ahead of Russell and Leclerc for Red Bull, while noting Russell’s power unit penalty applies to the grand prix grid. The incident report characterized Verstappen as having taken pole for the sprint, subject to the stewards’ review of the yellow-flag pass. The reports also linked readers to other Singapore Grand Prix coverage, including discussion of Russell’s penalty, Mercedes’ performance, tyre-saving by Antonelli and the Red Bull pair, and Lando Norris’s account that a fuel-system problem had “cost me quite a lot” in recent races.
