CTV News Calgary has reported:

Alberta has recorded its first flu-related death of the 2026-27 season, which began Aug. 30. The deceased was a woman aged 70 to 79, according to provincial figures. Flu statistics are counted from the end of August through the end of August the following year.

The province has logged 428 lab-confirmed flu cases, 112 hospitalizations and 14 admissions to intensive care units. Calgary accounts for 238 confirmed cases, 64 hospitalizations and five ICU admissions. The respiratory dashboard shows higher figures this early in the season than in recent years.

So far, 2,876 Albertans have received flu shots, including 1,777 in Calgary. Last year, confirmed cases did not begin to rise substantially until early October, while in 2024 they did not start until November. This season’s increase has come earlier than in the past couple of flu seasons.
