CTV News Calgary has reported:
Discovery House has launched a $10-million fundraising campaign to renovate its Calgary shelter and support programs and services for families experiencing domestic violence. The local non-profit, which provides shelter and support to those families, says the building needs an upgrade after 20 years. The campaign is called “Rebuilding Futures.”
More than $8 million has been raised so far through private donations and support from the province. Twelve of the shelter’s 19 apartments still need renovation, officials say. Children account for 70 per cent of Discovery House’s clients.
The shelter offers two-, three- and four-bedroom units, executive director Leslie Hill said. “The larger units are in huge demand for large family sizes because we have the only ones in the city,” Hill said. She added: “so it’s really important to us to preserve that housing stock, preserve safe spaces, for families to have the opportunity to heal.”
The renovations are intended to better support families who need a safe place to heal. Discovery House says more information about the campaign is available through its website.
