Phys.org has reported:
A layered semiconductor enables magnetic control of light emitted by quantum condensates, according to research reported by Phys.org. The development could make quantum research less dependent on specialized laboratory conditions.
Quantum technologies are considered key technologies of the future, but research can require both scientific expertise and highly specialized facilities. Bose-Einstein condensates, where atoms move in lockstep, make quantum-mechanical effects visible on a macroscopic scale as well as at the level of individual atoms.
The first such condensates were observed in ultracold atomic gases near absolute zero. Reaching those temperatures required technically demanding, costly cooling, limiting the work to specialized laboratories.
