Global News Edmonton has reported:
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that Canadians will decide Canada’s future, responding to Elon Musk’s call for Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to separate. Speaking to reporters in Sherbrooke, Que., Carney said the decision would reflect “the priorities of Canadians, the priorities of the people of Quebec.”
Musk, a former adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, posted on X on October 7, 2026, that the three provinces “should separate” and would be better off. Carney said discussion about the provinces’ futures should be “free from interference from foreign governments and large tech firms that think they can tell us what to do.” He also said Canadians would decide, not “large tech firms that think they can tell us what to do.”
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe responded to Musk’s post on social media with a one-word message: “No.” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also strongly disagreed with Musk’s opinion and has said she will vote to keep Alberta in Canada in an upcoming provincial referendum.
Albertans are scheduled to vote on October 19 on whether the province should remain in Canada or hold a second binding referendum to begin the separation process. The report included files from Canadian Press.
