CTV News Edmonton has reported:

Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the death of a 54-year-old man who died after an arrest by Edmonton police. Officers were called around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 to reports of a man acting erratically, trying to enter homes and damaging vehicles near Rapperswill Drive and 173A Avenue.

An officer arrived, ordered the man to the ground and handcuffed him without incident. ASIRT said the man then began struggling on the ground, while bystanders held down his legs. The officer called paramedics, but the man became unconscious.

An off-duty nurse at the scene began CPR. The man was taken to hospital in serious condition and died on Sept. 19. ASIRT is examining police actions during the arrest. The team investigates incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death.
